don't care. I just hate it when I forget which side it is. I think having it on different sides makes the distribution on cars at gas pumps better.

My Benz is the first car that has it on the passenger side I've driven on a consistent basis, some people say it's "less convenient" but it really doesn't make a difference at all.

The passenger side because I have had to refill a friend's Mustang and my wife's old Saab with the filler on the driver side with the car stopped on too small of a shoulder for either vehicle. I'd rather have the car closer to traffic than myself. Safety over convenience. (P.S. if three or four extra steps is inconvenient, I feel sorry for you)

When I bought my '01 Golf, the salesman said that the gas fill is on the right side of the car to keep you out of traffic if you're filling it on the side of the road. Ze Germans, zay sink of ev'rythink. Whether or not that's true, I don't know. But the fill on my Odyssey is on the left side, and I keep getting it confused. Ultimately, it doesn't matter.

Not sure actually...

-On the driver side, it is easier to snug up to the pump.

-On the passenger side, you don't smash your door getting out.

I'll take a filler behind the rear license plate.

Drivers side. The parking garage I use has way more dangerous pillars than any gas station so I'm not worried about that.

I don't find walking around to the passenger side inconvenient in and of itself however the gas station I most frequent has terrible awnings that don't extend over the whole car. When it's raining (and for a while after it stops) and I'm driving one of my cars with a passenger side fill I get nasty roof runoff all over myself getting out of and back into the car.

While Bandit already gave the correct answer, I like the fuel door on the driver's side - the left.

Fuel door on the left usually means a vehicle designed for the North American market.

Fuel door on the right usually means a vehicle designed for international sales.

I say usually because some folks don't follow the plan. Which is why I own a Dodge Ram 50 (Mitsubishi Mighty Max in the rest of the world) with a gas door on the driver's side, and a Pontiac Grand Am SE with the gas door on the passenger's side. :/

However, if I had to state a preference, I'd say passenger side. That way, if you are ever silly enough to run out of gas, when you are holding the jerry can up to fill it, you aren't on the side facing traffic

*Only valid if your car is designed for that market (i.e. LHD cars with RHT, and RHD cars with LHT)

I want it on the driver's side. Why?

Because that's where all the others are, and it's sometimes impossible to pull up to a pump at a crowded station when it's on the other side.

On my daily driver it's right behind the front right wheel. That's pretty tough sometimes.

Driver's side.

Don't have to walk around.

My cars all sit up to high to scrape on anything.

It's easier to get close to the pump, which at the gas station I frequent is important so another car can get to the other pump in the lane.

And the way the gas station close to my house is set up, mostly easier to get a pump. I beat an X3 to an open pump just yesterday because they had to drive around. Not a happy X3 driver.

And really, every car at my house has always had it on the driver's side, so I'm used to it. When I fill my girlfriend's Taurus with the filler on the passenger side, I'll sometimes accidentally park like its on the driver's side.

I like the passenger side for many reasons: 1. don't want to ding my door 2. I don't like the gas door messing with the clean lines when I walk up to the car 3. If I were to run out of gas (which I never have) I don't want to stand in the road to refill 4. I can inspect my car as I walk around (see: admire car) 5. my wife likes to watch me pump gas through the mirror for some reason. I don't ask questions, just enjoy the results ;)

really? assuming your statement is based on the possibility for non-NA cars to be driven on the left side of the road, what's the proportion of RHD vs LHD markets and actual cars? i can't imagine LHD is anywhere near the number for RHD.

i will say though that my british car has it on the left and german on the right. i always figured it was a matter of convenience in the design of the filler and placement of the tank. but i really have no idea.

Really don't care. Like, at all. I'd probably prefer it be on the passenger side so I don't have to see it when I approach the car, and I would think most people would prefer that.

It's a trick we use on our jets sometimes: if something won't look nice, put it on the side the customer doesn't see. For example, we'll try to put access panels on the right side of the plane instead of the left where possible.

11/21/2014 at 21:16

I prefer it on the right side of the car for a very specific reason: the gas station I use the most has a one-way flow. That means there's always a line for the pumps that fill left-handed cars, because the majority of cars have it on the left, and I can just breeze right up to a pump on the other side because only my car and some Subarus seem to have it on the right.

As far as I am aware, the fuel filler door is generally placed so it's on the driver's side for the vehicle's (or the vehicle's chassis') home market. It's not just an arbitrary thing.

Sometimes, though, this comes up with weird things - the Ford Fiesta/Mazda 2 and the Fusion have the filler door on the left, the Focus has it on the right.
